There was a flash, and the squealing of tyres seemed to fade away into an echo. Suddenly she could see everything in perfect slow-motion detail. The metallic white paint of the car sparkled at her, a mere half-metre away. The tread on the tyres was new, and ominously ridged. The lines along the side of the road were yellow and broken, and those which stretched across the middle of the road were thick and white. The white and yellow contrasted strongly with the dark grey bitumen, and the lines’ edges appeared sharper than usual. Each piece of gravel jutted out of the road’s surface, like crystals of uncut quartz. A thud… And
